Unit 1 Part C: The feedback of questionnaire (Criss Chaney)

Your name: Criss Chaney     The genre of artwork: Glass Sculpture
1. What does Art mean to you? How do you define this term?
Art is how we express the intangible aspects of being human, it's a way in which we can explore our surroundings and lives, and a pathway towards making sense and meaning of our experiences. It can be a method of communication with others or with our own subconscious.
2.How do you describe yourself?
I'm a glass artist- or more precisely- a California Glass Artist Rockin it in Britain
3. What do you think the job role of artist?
I would say the role of an artist is to explore and interpret. To explore materials, to explore culture, philosophy, themselves, its important to always be trying new things and learning from them.
4. How important as the Art talent for you?
Oooh that's hard to say really, I always try to infuse a bit of art into anything I make. I admire many different artists for many different reasons, not just to do with their artistic talent.

5. How has your family background influenced the way you at Arts studying?
I was always encouraged to be creative, I had so many painting a drawing kits, and I used to take drawing classes with my mother when I was about 6. My mother also did stained glass before I was born, and all through my childhood she always told me how much she loved it, but we could never find anywhere to take classes. Finally I managed to take a class in high school, and I was hooked on glass. The following summer we cleared out her garage, and I dug out all her old equipment and set up a studio, and for my first project I made her a big window for her store.
6. Which artist/artists do you like most?
Oh so many, there's Willaim Morris for his earthly feel and I've always been fascinated with prehistory
Judith Schaechter for her expressive illustrations, and reinventing traditional stained glass techniques
Bruno Romanelli for his sheer mastery of kiln glass and the play between opacity and transparency
Alex Bernstein for his technique in combining glass and metals and playing on opacity, translucency, and color

7. How did they influenced you?
I think I take what I like best from each of them and try to use it when I make my own sculptures, reinterpreting them into my own voice.

8. Which organisations support you now? Where are your mainly income from?
My main income is from working in Starbucks, I also do a bit of freelance online marketing, and classes, and I sell my work. At the moment Creative Cohesion is supporting me, providing affordable facilities and space to make my work, as well as opportunities to run classes and community workshops.

9. How do you continued to develop your skills?
I just try to learn as much as I can by reading and asking, and then I try to make as much as possible, test new ideas for myself and see how they come out.

10. What’s your career goal? How could you to come true it?
I would like to travel around the world, making art. I imagine that I could do it by working with other artists assisting them in their studios and making my own work, as well as getting residencies around the world.

she has been developing a new technique where she combines glass and metals, exploiting techniques for working with both materials, her pieces make people question their views on glass and push the boundaries between glass and other media. Her objects always have interior and exterior space for the viewer to enjoy and interact with.

If the Glass artist is a part of Criss, doing charity is another part of her. She is  currently the treasurer for Creative Cohesion, an arts charity where provide artists have a free studio space and business mentoring, while also working to raise money for Action Aid.
She also creates and organises the Glass course as a part of her income. Her See-Through Sand class casting classes coved clay sculpting, basic open facemoulds, rubber alginate moulds, lost wax and glass casting at Creative Cohesion, it attracted many beginners to learn the process.

Unit 1 Part C: The research about Paul Stangroom

Paul stangroom who is a based Hexham outstanding aritst in Northeast England,  the Northumberland landscape has provided him with rekindled source of inspiration. he has won the royal watercolour society prize in 2009 in london, it proved he is one of the best painter in 21st Century Watercolour exhibition. His masterwork paints have been sold to collectors all over the world, and his small printings and greeting cards based on his popular works have been limited sold at online gallery and biscuit factory gallery. Furthermore, his work all over the world from Newcastle to Delhi.

The art influence of Paul from his farther Lawrence Strangroom who also is an artist/illustrator, and teached Paul in the traditional techniques and skills. then paul studied Fine ART AT THE central School of Art in london and at Sunderland Polytechnic Faculty of Art and Design (it be called university of sunderland now).
He has produce few albums include Northumberland, Whitby Abbey, the Windows and India.

In 1979, Paul Stangroom fist visited Himalayan mountains in India, the experience not only support his painting for the albums India Collection, but also effect his further artwork which always include elements of wild and remote places. Furthermore, collectors was magnetize by his diversity experience, so his artwork in various private collections across the world.

From 1994 to 1997, he archived drawings and paintings of sculpture in Whitby Abbey for English Heritage, as a part of an archaeological and structural survey of the monument, it is the source for the albums of Whitby Abbey.

Since moving to Hexham in 2002,Paul has found the pennines and Narthumberland to a new and more poignant source of inspiration. he spent a lot of time wandering the fells and have become increasingly interested in the abandoned and often derelict cottages. 'i will often wait for a number of years before painting some of the places and visit them at different times of the year to try and understand why a particular place has had an impact on me, I suppose the paintings are my way of trying to undersand why these places have struck some kind of chard or resonance with me.'(Paul, 2011)

Before 2006, He was a lecturer at Northeast England. Then, he teach the ongoing private art classes at Hexham. It support the core income to pursue his artwork. As his comment the period of time:" this has evolved over many years and within that various themes have kept on emerging.' He is a lucky man, more artists pass into silence and give up their dreams in their grey time.

There has few photos of Paul's artwork when i visited Biscuit Factory.( PLEASE NOTE ALL THE PICTURES I HAVE ADDED TO THIS BLOG WERE TAKEN USING MY CAMERA PHONE. PURELY FOR DOCUMENTING PURPOSES

At the first time when i seen the Paul's painting, i took his artwork for the photo of landscape, but not a colourwater painting, it showed how veritable and vivid his artwork is. he good at display the many shades of  colours, there is great contrast between the tiny brushstrokes for close shot with the background of sky. His artwork influenced my painting practice to be more vivid and use the great contrast into the artwork. Also, I have better understanding about how the painting to show the frame of mind and how to bring to bear the gold section into the painting of structure. From Paul's experience, I learnt the success of artists are not only continue hard working. but a really masterwork has a historical massiness of precipitation comes down, the painting like the mirror as artist's the inner world and intelligent.
I also learnt that the limited paintings might bring the limited income, but if the artists could to sell the photo of paintings or produced the cards which has the painting, then the 'only one' painting could to been continue produce and selling. On another words, to develop the painting related products is a good way to increased the income and improved the influence of artists.
